چکیده

In this paper, we study the delay and capacity trade-offs for wireless ad hoc networks with random mobility. We consider some simple distributed scheduling and relaying protocols that are motivated by the 2-hop relaying protocol proposed by Grossglauser and Tse (2001). We consider a model in which the nodes are placed uniformly on a sphere, and move in accordance with an i.i.d. mobility model. We consider two i.i.d mobility models: Brownian mobility model and random way-point mobility model. We show that under a distributed Grossglauser-Tse 2-hop relaying protocol, the delay scales as Θ(Tp(n)n) for random way-point mobility model, and O(Tp(n) log 2 n) for Brownian mobility model, where Tp(n) is the transmission time of the packet. In the case, where only nearest neighbor transmissions are allowed, the delay is shown to scale as Ω(Tp(n) √ n), for all possible scheduling and relaying protocols. In the case of random way-point mobility model, we show that delay/capacity ≥ Θ(Tp(n)n) is a necessary trade-off. Two protocols which achieve the lower bound of Θ(Tp(n)n) are considered, and their relative performance in terms of delay/capacity trade-off is established. Our results indicate that significant improvement in the delay can be achieved by reducing the packet size, at high node speeds.

On Achievable Delay/Capacity Trade-offs in Mobile Ad Hoc Networks

Recent work of Gupta and Kumar (2000) has shown that in a multi-hop wireless network the throughput capacity per source-destination pair goes to zero as the node density increases. While it has been shown that a constant throughput scaling per source-destination pair can be achieved in mobile ad hoc networks, the delay related aspects have not been considered in detail. In this paper, we study ...

Improving Quality of Service Routing in Mobile Ad Hoc Networks Using OLSR

Mobile ad hoc networks (MANET) are constructed by mobile nodes without access point. Since MANET has certain constraints, including power shortages, an unstable wireless environment and node mobility, more power-efficient and reliable routing protocols are needed. The OLSR protocol is an optimization of the classical link state algorithm. OLSR introduces an interesting concept, the multipoint r...

Delay and Capacity Trade-off in Wireless Ad Hoc Networks with Random Mobility

In this paper, we study the delay and capacity trade-off in mobile ad hoc networks. We consider an ad hoc network with n nodes distributed uniformly on a sphere. The nodes are mobile, and move in accordance with the random way-point mobility model, used widely in the ad hoc networks literature. We show that the 2-hop relaying algorithm proposed by Grossglauser and Tse (2001), incurs an expected...

The Feedback Based Mechanism for Video Streaming Over Multipath Ad Hoc Networks

Ad hoc networks are multi-hop wireless networks without a pre-installed infrastructure. Such networks are widely used in military applications and in emergency situations as they permit the establishment of a communication network at very short notice with a very low cost. Video is very sensitive for packet loss and wireless ad-hoc networks are error prone due to node mobility and weak links. H...

Mobility-capacity-delay trade-off in wireless ad hoc networks

We show that there is a trade-off among mobility, capacity, and delay in ad hoc networks. More specifically, we consider two schemes for node mobility in ad hoc networks. We divide the entire network by cells whose sizes can vary with the total number of nodes n, or whose size is independent of the number of nodes. We restrict the movement of nodes within these cells, calculate throughput and d...
